Au Pair Australien

Live your dream und entdecke Australien

Module 5 – Becoming a Toddler - Promoting manipulation

  • Show him how to unscrew lids, thread things onto string, pour water, and turn pages, etc.
  • Teach him how to do things for himself, such as using a spoon and taking his socks off.
  • Give him activity boards and toys that have lots of features for pressing, turning and spinning.
  • Provide him with building blocks and stacking toys.
  • Work together on puzzles, drawing and painting.

Module 7 - Learning through play

How does playing help the child to learn?

Play is not just fun. It stimulates a child's senses, especially vision, touch and hearing. It hones her powers of observation and helps her develop and practice co-ordination and other skills. Some toys encourage a child to use her imagination more than others. If a child is deprived of play opportunities she may experience learning difficulties later.

Play will help the child to:

  • Develop imagination and nurture creativity
  • Try new things and develop self-confidence
  • Manage emotions (in a safe environment), by experiencing frustration, success, disappointment, and enjoyment.
  • Develop problem-solving skills and reasoning ability
  • Build physical strength and competence
  • Develop motor skills, such as co-ordination, movement, and balance.
  • Develop cognitive skills, such as planning, problem solving, memory and testing a theory- for example, ‘If I hide teddy, will he still be there later?
  • Develop social skills and eventually develop friendships
  • Encourage language development

How can I encourage my child to be creative?

Provide your child with paper, pencils, paints, dry pasta shapes, modeling clay or dough as soon as she is ready- which probably will be at around 18 months – and she will provide the imagination and enthusiasm, although she won't concentrate for long. Don't spend a long time setting up painting or modeling. When the child has scribbled you a picture or made something out of card and cotton wool, be appreciative. She may not be creating representational art just yet, but something praiseworthy about it.- ‘that's a nice shape' or ‘ what lovely colours' are positive comments.

Ways to play

Different types of play to nurture different skills and prevent boredom

Reading

It's never too late to start reading a child. Every turn of the page brings a surprise, and she can point and learn as you read out loud to her. This is great one-to-one time, so try to do it every day, ideally at the same time, such as bedtime. Put plenty of expression into your voice to really bring the book alive, and point at the pictures as you speak, so your child learns that they are linked to the words. Make relevant noises where appropriate, such as animals or cars, and encourage your child to copy you.

Drawing and painting

Scribbling, drawing and painting are excellent ways for the toddler to express herself, and it's fascinating to keep her artworks in a folder and see how her style and abilities develop over time. You can join in and remind yourself how bad you are at drawing. Colouring books and crayons are always worth having to hand. lying on the floor alongside the child, quietly colouring the same picture, can be a real bonding opportunity and a very relaxing pastime.

Messy play

Contrary to popular belief, not all child's play is messy. But most is, some of them include splashing around with water, digging in a sandpit, moulding playdough, and, of course, cooking and painting. These are all great fun, giving the child the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and encouraging her to make use of her different senses.

Cooking

The idea of cooking with the toddler sounds like a lot of fun. But before you make the announcement, take a good look at the recipe you are planning to use and work out how long it will take to make, including cooking time. Even something like iced biscuits can take several hours, once you have made the dough, cut the shapes, bake them, waited for them to cool, mixed up the incredibly sticky icing sugar, and decorated the biscuits. Then you wait for the icing to set, while fighting off a now rabidly hungry child and trying to hose down the kitchen, yourself and the child. Consider instead making biscuits without icing, or use ready-prepared icing.

Creative play

All toddlers love making things so it's a good idea to have a craft box where you collect usable items such as coloured tissue, toilet rolls and egg boxes. Crafts are an ideal rainy day activity, and the bonus is that at the end of it your child has a new toy to play with- usually a flimsy cardboard tractor, robot or something halfway between two. It's also fun to make greeting cards for special occasions.

Whatever you decide to do, it's best to start things off yourself and then let the toddler take over. Be very admiring of her efforts and avoid any criticism of the finished product- even if a tractor would never have square wheels.

Imaginative play

This type of play is good to encourage because it doesn't cost anything. All the child needs is a little imagination and it can be fascinating to watch what she invents fr om a few old clothes and a sheet hung over some chairs in the shape of a tent. On the other hand, children's fancy dress is now big business and no movie is released without a range of mini costumes being available for a child to recreate the story at home.

Music and dance

Whatever music she enjoys, make the most of it. Toddlers love to sing and dance so it's really a good way of changing a child's mood, whether you play it yourselves on makeshift instruments, or turn on the stereo for some lively Latin beats. You can prolog the child's interest by introducing games such as musical chairs or statues. It's as well good physical exercise and helps improve a child's co-ordination and balance.
