To be able to work as an au pair in Australia, an au pair must be a national of one of the countries that have a Working Holiday Scheme agreement with Australia
These are the countries that can apply:
Belgium, Canada, The Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, The Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Republic of Korea, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the U.S.
- Age: must be age 18-30
- Salary (Pocket money) : On average an au pair can expect to earn between AUD150 - AUD220 per week
- Number of hrs to work and days off: Au pairs in Australia usually work between 20-40 hrs/week and usually get 2 days off per week
- Visas : It is necessary to have a working holiday visa to work as an au pair.
- Duration of stay: With a working holiday visa, an au pair can work in Australia for up to 12 months
- Language requirements: It is suggested that an au pair have a good understanding of English, the national language of Australia.
- Health Insurance: An au pair is not required to have insurance however, as medical treatment in Australia is expensive, it is advisable that they have both travel and health insurance.
- Travel costs: Travel costs to Australia from the au pairs home country should be covered by the au pair. However, if the host family wants to pay for a part of the costs, it is suggested that they do so after the au pair has stayed with them for at least half of the agreed time.
